How herb yield works
A herb patch starts with 3 harvest lives, plus 1 for compost, 2 for supercompost and 3 for ultracompost. Each pick has a chance to save the life it would have spent, which rises with your Farming level; the expected herbs from a patch are its lives divided by the chance of losing one. Magic secateurs add 10%, the farming cape 5%, an attas plant 5%, the Kandarin diaries 5, 10 or 15% at Catherby, and the hard Kourend & Kebos diary 5% at Hosidius and the Farming Guild.
Disease is 27 in 128 each growth stage on an unprotected patch, a half of that with compost, a fifth with supercompost and a tenth with ultracompost, over three stages. The patches at the Troll Stronghold, Weiss and Harmony Island never catch it; Hosidius stops with the easy Kourend & Kebos diary, and Civitas illa Fortis at Champion rank in the Fortis Colosseum. An iasor plant takes 80% off the chance everywhere else.
